Three world records in Rotterdam

Three marathon world records have been run in Rotterdam; twice by a man and once by a woman. The first time was in 1985 when Carlos Lopes from Portugal finished in 2.07.12 after a masterly solo-race. Three years later that record was broken on the Coolsingel by the Ethiopian Belayneh Densamo in 2.06.50. That record stood for a good ten years. Tegla Loroupe from Kenya gave Rotterdam a women's world record in 1998: 2.20.47. She herself broke that record eleven years later.
